Food Systems Youth
The Esquimalt Farmers Market (EFM) is seeking 4 youth (aged 18-22) to participate in a Food Systems Summer Volunteer Mentorship. Over the 8 week program, each participant will be immersed in practical hands-on mentorship at a local farm and have the opportunity to contribute to the successful operation of a local farmers market. The program facilitates the exchange of participant labour and commitment for instruction, supervision, and mentorship from EFM and our partner farm. Market Set Up
3:00 - 4:30
This position involves assisting with all aspects of market setup. It can include heavy lifting but there are light duties also available. A reasonably high level of mobility is required. It may include putting out tent markers and cones for social distancing, setting out signage/sandwich boards, putting up ropes, setting up popup tents or folding tables, setting up handwashing stations, directing traffic or assisting vendors with their load-in.
4:30 - 6:00 / 6:00 - 7:30
The volunteers for this shift would be assisting in operations during the market. Duties may include greeting shoppers or controlling the entry point, answering shopper questions, making sure there is general tidiness and compliance of rules, and cover for Market Vendors for short periods to go to the washroom or get food. These are low-impact positions and are appropriate for any level of mobility.
Market Pack Up
7:15 - 8:30
This shift involves some heavy lifting and good mobility to collect all market equipment from the field and surrounding areas and pack it neatly into our storage, and help vendors to pack up and load their vehicles. This is one we really need the help with! Tell your friends and bring them with you!
